I really like the sleek, chunky sports watches that were born from the 1970s to the mid 80s. I've asked Saori, Rich and Sean on our retro team to keep an eye out for a particularly mint-flavored Heuer Kentucky. Or the Mark II Speedmaster. But what really bothers me about them is the retro Zenith Defy from the 1970s with the trapezoid bracelet.
I've tried them when they landed in stores before, and during a recent visit to Zenith Manufacture in Le Locle, when I was in Switzerland for Geneva auction week, I was able to handle an almost identical example of Zenith Product Development Lead and Heritage Director Romain Marietta.

Born in 1969, the Zenith Defy is a line of rugged watches with a unique design that predates the development of the luxury sports watch genre by a few years. Octagonal tonneau case, 14-face bezel, Gay Fréres trapezoid bracelet - enough to drive you crazy. At Le Locle, the experience is improved by comparing the latest high-tech Defy version to its older predecessor.
Zenith was kind enough to lend me a sample of the new 2021 Defy Extreme, a bold expansion of the company's contemporary flagship, the Defy 21. Looking at the Defy Extreme for the first time, it's easy to overlook the collection as an ambitious attempt to incorporate advanced 21st century watch design into a bottle. It's true that the matte case is full of hard corners and edges; it's also true that the case design is closely related to the original Zenith Defy collection from the early 1970s. The new Defy is at the same time Zenith’s answer to the high-tech world of watchmaking in the 21st century, and a way for the Swiss company to finally express a forgotten part of its history.
I chatted with Zenith CEO Julien Tornare while I was in Switzerland and asked him how the Defy fits the brand's goals today, especially when products like the Chronomaster Sport and Chronomaster Original are getting all the awards and headlines this year.

what makes it tick
What makes the Defy special is intricately linked to the movement inside. The El Primero calibre 9004 is one of the few chronograph movements in all horological history that can record elapsed times of up to a hundredth of a second. Zenith manages to do this with a central chronograph second hand capable of making a lightning-quick revolution around the dial every second. Several other watch brands have reached a similar pace in the past, including TAG Heuer, FP Journe and Montblanc, but Zenith was one of the first to use the technology to make watches.
Caliber 9004 is based on the architecture of the original El Primero, but contains a secondary gear train and a high-frequency escapement operating at 360,000 vph or 50 Hz, as well as a second mainspring barrel. The normal timekeeping part of the watch is similar to a traditional El Primero, with a frequency of 5 Hz, or 36,000 vph, followed by a second stopwatch-specific part of the movement, which is isolated so it does not consume energy from the basic timekeeping mechanism. There is no clutch connecting the two separate parts of the ensemble - although both are integrated on the same main board - so running the chronograph results in zero timing fluctuations or loss of amplitude in the main time display.
This is most clearly illustrated by the fact that each adjustment system has an individual power reserve. The traditional hours and minutes have the standard El Primero 50-hour power reserve, while the chronograph can only run in 50-minute increments. Did you notice that the Defy Extreme doesn't have an elapsed time sub-dial? that's why.

Although the two mainspring barrels are independent of each other, they are both individually wound. Whereas traditional chronographs are wound by a rotor or by turning the crown counterclockwise, the chronograph can only be wound by manually turning the crown clockwise – it takes about 50 revolutions to fully power the chronograph. To track the running time of the chronograph, the power reserve is located below the 12 o'clock position.
With such an emphasis on the movement inside the Defy Extreme, Zenith employs a semi-open dial with a coloured sapphire crystal. The main chronograph balance is at 8 o’clock and the mainspring barrel at 12 o’clock; the separate chronograph balance can be seen through the sapphire crystal display caseback. When the chronograph starts, it runs at an incredible 360,000 bph (50 Hz!), moving so fast it's almost impossible to tell it's moving. (One of my favorite skeleton Zenith details is the star-shaped silicon escape wheel.)
Since the Defy Extreme can measure times up to hundredths of a second, Zenith makes sure it can be done with clarity. There is a scale ring on the rehaut, from 1 to 100, followed by three sub-dials – chronograph minutes at three o’clock, chronograph seconds at six o’clock and running seconds at nine o’clock. Unlike the traditional El Primero 400 and El Primero 3600, the date window has been adjusted.
